Summer has arrived, school is out, and you’re looking forward to taking some time off for vacation. Setting up dental appointments is probably one of the last things on your mind, but you should make sure that your family’s oral health needs are taken care of before getting swept up in the fun. The fact of the matter is that the beginning of summer can be an ideal time for a dental checkup; here’s why.

Scheduling is Less of a Headache

Two dental checkups a year isn’t very many, but it can still be tricky to schedule appointments around school or work. With the kids on summer break, finding time to visit the dentist is less of a hassle, and you won’t have to worry about them missing important lessons. Summer dental appointments can also be convenient for adults who were already planning on using some of their PTO.

You Can Prepare Your Smile for the Summer

Your smile might be at a higher-than-average risk for cavities over the next few months if you’re planning on indulging in some sugary summer staples such as ice cream and soda. Even foods that would normally be considered healthy can cause problems; for example, certain acidic fruits can wear down your enamel.

You can ensure that your smile is well-protected against cavities during the summer by visiting your dentist. Not only can they get rid of plaque and tartar that have already built up in your mouth, but they can also use fluoride treatments to strengthen your teeth.

Dental Emergencies Will Be Less Likely to Happen

There’s never a good time to have a dental emergency, but you definitely don’t want to have to deal with a severe toothache when you’re on vacation. Relatively minor dental issues should be taken care of before you leave town so that they don’t turn into major problems when you’re unable to get to your regular dentist’s office. Visit your dentist as soon as you can at the beginning of summer so that any existing oral health problems can be treated now instead of later.

You Can Start Getting Ready for Back-to-School Season Early

Many parents wait until school is just about to start again to set up dental appointments for their children. While this is certainly one option, it’s often easier to get these checkups out of the way at the start of summer rather than the end. That way, there will be one less item on a to-do list that will likely already be quite lengthy.
